Sunil Bharti Mittal Adjudged Among Top Entrepreneurs In Businessweek Worldwide Poll
NEW DELHI, January 3, 2001: Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises has been adjudged among the top entrepreneurs for the year 2000 by the prestigious business magazine, Business Week. The award was decided after an extensive annual survey of 180 writers, editors and over 24 bureaus worldwide to select and cull the top 25 Managers and Entrepreneurs who are considered among The World's very best whose success stories provide enduring lessons in the art of management.
Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal along with Gururaj Deshpande of Sycamore Networks, is the only other Indian to have been selected among the top entrepreneurs for the year 2000. Mr. Mittal has been recognized as an entrepreneur, "who has transformed his small bicycle-parts business into a telephone equipment maker, and now India's premier cellular operator." The magazine recognizes Mr. Mittal's steadfastness in investing $225 million for three licenses, spurring consolidation and more recently the SingTel investment of $400 million - the largest by any foreign investor in the Indian telecom sector. All this in addition to the fact that Bharti Enterprises is the only company in Telecom sector to with a growth rate of 50% per annum is evidence of the Bharti Group being considered amongst the most promising entrepreneurial organizations in the South East Asian rim, notes Business Week.
An alumnus of Harvard Business School, Boston, USA, he is also a member of the steering committee, executive committee and chairman of the Telecom Committee of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and co-Chairman of the Indo-US Joint Business Council. He was awarded the "Telecom man of the Year 1997" and was the recipient of Wisitex 2000 International Award, "IT Ratna of the Millennium".
The recognition comes close on the heels of the recent Ernst & Young, "Entrepreneur of the Year, 1999" award given to Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal and more recently, the first ever Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (IDFC) Award for the "Most Entrepreneurial Organization of the Year, 2000".
