MPLS

  • how does MPLS work?

    • MPLS combines IP routing and label switching to forward packets across the network.

  • can the customer use private IPs?

    • Yes, it is possible to route customer’s private IP’s on the Airtel network using MPLS VPN’s or by using some kind of tunneling protocol like GRE/IPsec.

  • how many classes of service are available?

    • Only One Class Of Service – Business.

  • will airtel honor COS packets marked by the customer?

    • Yes, Airtel will honor COS packets marked by the customers provided the customer has marked the packets in corresponding with our EXP bits – if not then the packets will be re-labeled at the Ingress PE.

  • does the MPLS label attachment process effect the content of the packet the customer sends?

    • No, The MPLS label is attached over and above the customer’s data, whatever the format the packet is in.

  • do labels attach any overheads to the customer’s network?

    • No, All the overheads incurred by Label attachment are incurred in the core only.

  • what routing protocol is supported CE to PE in L3VPN?

    • We support static and e-BGP (Dynamic) routing protocol between CPE and PE.

  • how many POPS are available?

    • We have 120+ MPLS enabled PoPs in India.

  • is the MPLS network “shared” by the internet network because the routers are shared?

    • In Tier1 and Tier2 MPLS PoP’s Airtel has implemented separate MPLS and Internet routers. However in the Tier3 MPLS PoP’s the MPLS and the Internet routers are shared, in these locations the Internet traffic is sent over a separate VRF to a default route to the gateway router. The IP address scheme is also different for the two networks.

  • what is the cost model to customers?
