Android 14 QPR2 Update Starts Rolling Out

Like Apple, Google releases a major software update somewhere around October every year. However, what is not like Apple, is that Google keeps on releasing smaller updates all through the year as well, which are known as Feature Drops and mostly cater to the Google Pixel phones. Now, these feature drops are often tested and that is where you get the name of Quarterly Platform Release Betas (QPR).

Android Quarterly Platform Release Betas refer to pre-release versions of the Android operating system that are made available to developers and enthusiasts for testing and feedback purposes. These beta releases are part of Google’s efforts to gather feedback, identify bugs, and refine the Android platform before its official public release.

What does the Android 14 QPR2 update contain?

The Android 14 QPR2 introduces a new feature that enhances Bluetooth quick settings toggle functionality. With Beta 3, Google simplifies the process of connecting and disconnecting from individual Bluetooth devices. Similar to the Internet quick settings toggle, the Bluetooth toggle now prompts a pop-up window, allowing you to easily manage device connections with a single tap.

New Bluetooth Settings with Android 14 QPR2

Previously, users had to perform a long press to access Bluetooth settings, while a short tap toggled Bluetooth on and off. This adjustment is particularly useful for individuals who prefer to keep Bluetooth enabled continuously for seamless connectivity to smartwatches and fitness trackers. This enhancement streamlines the user experience.

Improved dark theme experience

Android 14 QPR2 may introduce an additional option for an always dark theme. While Google Pixel phones already offer a forced dark theme through developer options, this feature is not readily accessible to all users. Google might integrate a “Make all apps dark” option within Settings -> Accessibility -> Colour and motion in the stable QPR2 release. This potential addition aims to simplify dark theme activation for all users, including those with accessibility preferences.

Convert to eSIM easily with Android 14 QPR2

In addition, Android 14 QPR2 also prepares to introduce a feature enabling users to convert their physical SIM cards into eSIMs directly from their devices. The presence of a “Convert to eSIM” option within the SIM settings, although currently non-functional, indicates Google’s ongoing efforts in this area. With this feature, users can potentially transition to eSIMs without involving their carriers. Although the tool is not yet operational, its interface suggests an imminent release. Lock screen updates with Android 14 QPR2

Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 also enhances the vertical lock screen style by displaying additional information. Initially introduced with Android 14, the vertical lock screen prominently features the date along the left edge of the screen. With the latest beta release, this lock screen style now showcases bold symbols for set alarms and Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, providing users with more comprehensive information. Previously, this lock screen style did not incorporate alarms or DND notifications, making this update a notable improvement in user experience.

Enhanced Screen Sharing Options for Single Apps

If you have a Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, or Pixel 5a with 5G and newer models, then you can share single apps instead of their entire screens. This capability is applicable during casting, recording, or presenting activities within a video call setting.

Streamlining Bluetooth Device Management with Google Account Integration

Bluetooth previously paired to devices associated with your Google account are now conveniently displayed on the connected devices settings page. This integration, facilitated by Fast Pair, enables swift synchronisation of Bluetooth earphones or speakers on new devices.

Additional Features introduced in the March 2024 Feature Drop

• Access public transit directions on Google Maps via Wear OS.
