Reviews and Ratings of Sultan of Delhi

Sultan of Delhi web series is a riveting gangster drama that brings viewers to the turbulent timeof 1962 Delhi and delves into the city’s underbelly. The program is based on Arnab Ray’s novel Sultan of Delhi: Ascension and is directed by Milan Luthria, who also co-wrote the nine-part series with Suparn S Verma. The story is full of drama, romance, adventure, and the enduring connections of friendship, making it a compelling watch.

The voyage of Arjun Bhatia (Tahir Raj Bhasin) is essential to the plot. He arrives in Delhi, a city in the grip of political and militant upheaval, as a young lad who experienced the horrors of Partition. His desire to overcome the pains of his past leads him into the criminal world, beginning with the guns trade and collaborating with his buddy Bangali (Anjumm Shharma). They join the world of criminal commerce together, guided by Jagan Seth (Vinay Pathak). The series is filled with traditional noir characteristics such as treachery, power conflicts, ego battles, and the building of empires. Arjun’s love story with Sanjana (Mehreen Pirzada) provides a sweet and personal depth to the crime amongst all the brutality and intrigue.

One of the show’s merits is its timing and the way it develops the tale in layers, which keeps viewers completely involved. It also avoids categorizing characters as either heroes or villains, allowing for more complex character development. Having said that, the story swings across timeframes and generations to highlight the protagonist’s ups and downs. While the on-screen years help viewers keep track, the program only partially portrays the look and feel of the 1960s, and the language sounds out of place at times.

Tahir Raj Bhasin excels as Arjun Bhatia, who undergoes a dramatic change during the series. Anjumm Shharma’s portrayal of Bengali embodies the essence of a devoted companion, evoking legendary Bollywood pairings such as Jai Veeru. Vinay Pathak’s portrayal of Jagan Seth achieves an ideal combination of empathy and brutality. Although Nishant Dahiya’s depiction of the adversary, Rajender Pratap Singh, is noteworthy, Anupriya Goenka’s portrayal of Shankari Devi steals the show. Among the other female protagonists, Mouni Roy is stunning as Nayantara. Mehreen Pirzada and Harleen Sethi both win hearts with their straightforward portrayals of Bhatia’s love interests.

Overall, Sultan of Delhi translates Arnab Ray’s book into a compelling series that captures the essence of a dramatic and turbulent period in Delhi’s history. While it may be loved as pulp and pop culture, it pays homage to the original material, making it an interesting watch for aficionados of historical crime dramas.
